EnerWise

The EnerWise project tackles energy consumption challenges in school communities by testing a socio-technical solution that combines energy monitoring, education, and behavioural change. The aim is to create a smart, sustainable, and energy-efficient learning environment using IoT technologies, analytics, and community engagement strategies.

The EnerWise solution is based on two two main pillars detailed below.

Technology Toolbox

  • IoT Infrastructure: Smart meters for electricity and heating, with data aggregation gateways. These devices collect energy consumption data in real time.
  • Web Platform: A cloud-based system manages and analyzes energy data. It enables centralized monitoring, and historical analysis of consumption patterns.
  • Advanced Analytics: Analytics identify trends, anomalies, and energy-saving opportunities, supporting school administrators in decision-making. Automated alerts flags unusual consumption and usage.
  • Educational Integration: Interactive modules on the platform and mobile app engage students and teachers around energy conservation and sustainability.
  • Mobile App: Provides users with real-time feedback and interactive tools linked to the platform.

Community Engagement and Behaviour Change Mechanism

A set of scalable and transferable interventions targets students, parents, teachers, and administrators. These include:

  • Workshops: Awareness and capacity-building events, enhanced with digital educational material.
  • Quizzes: Assess pre- and post-intervention knowledge on sustainable energy habits.
  • Citizen Science Events: Local gatherings to share energy-saving practices.
  • Energy-Saving Challenges: Incentivized competitions encourage reduced consumption.
  • Energy Cooperatives: Encourages formation of local energy communities, in partnership with Electra Energy Cooperative.
  • Business Involvement: Engagement of nearby businesses to provide rewards and support initiatives.
  • Community Ambassadors: Identification and empowerment of individuals to promote energy-efficient behaviours.
