Traccia-TO

TRACCIA-TO focus will center on addressing textile waste by testing a socio-technical solution in a selected urban area, San Salvario. The aim is to gather and analyze potential production and collection data for textile waste, with a secondary check on small WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment).

The TRACCIA-TO solution works on a 4 strands strategy, described below.

Mapping the Current Situation

  • Bin Monitoring: From October 28, 2024, to January 8, 2025, 10 collection bins were monitored using AI technology capable of recognizing filling levels by image processing. A total of 11 tons of waste was collected over the course of 92 pickups, with an average bin filling level of 66%.
  • Waste Sampling: A 1,000 kg sample revealed 2.16% textiles (25% of which were reusable) and 1.9 kg of WEEE, indicating missed opportunities for reuse or proper disposal. Based on estimates, San Salvario produces 138.43 tons of textiles and 12.18 tons of WEEE annually.

Stakeholder Mapping

Fifty local businesses and organizations were mapped, showing strong environmental awareness and a willingness to collaborate. Suggestions included increasing textile collection points, promoting creative reuse workshops, and providing WEEE-specific materials for shops.

Citizen Engagement and Awareness Campaigns

A survey with 28 questions highlighted key insights:

  • Lack of collection points: Citizens find existing textile and WEEE disposal options limited or unclear, especially for small appliances.
  • Knowledge gaps: Many are unsure about proper disposal methods, often resorting to general waste or storing items at home
  • Neighborhood-centric solutions: Respondents suggested leveraging local businesses, community hubs, and events for collection and awareness initiatives.

Impact Evaluation

The final phase will assess the impact of citizen awareness campaigns and new collection efforts.
